Okanagan-Shuswap neighbourhoods: the City of Penticton
Penticton is the population centre of the South Okanagan, being midway between Kelowna and the US border. The city itself is nestled in a level delta between Okanagan and Skaha lakes., with the Okanagan River marking the western boundary (with both the airport and an Indian reservation on the other side). The city is best known for food processing and packing, as well as the wine-making and grape growing in the area. The manufacturing in the city is targeted at specialty foods and sporting goods. Because of its warm summer climate and mild winters, its convention centre, with a capacity of 4,000 is BCís second biggest. The airport is served by Central Mountain Air and Canadian Airlines with regular daily service to Vancouver and Calgary.
Older homes, tending to be smaller, in the city are around $125,000. Newer homes are being built on the benchlands (terraces in the neighbouring hillsides). 2 storey detached homes cost around$150,000, lakeshore properties start around $200,000, and townhouses/condos run $85,000-$125,000. Penticton has a healthy rental market.
Pentictonís school district serves the lower Okanagan and the Skaha Lake area, and has 12 elementary and 3 secondary schools. The Okanagan University College, a degree-granting institution, has a campus with 800 students, just west of downtown. Francophone students are accommodated at Trout Creek (K-5), MacDonald Elementary (6-8) and Summerland Secondary (9-12).
The city has several shopping malls stretching along South Main Street,which has a quaint downtown shopping area between mains St and Martin Street (which are one-way north of Eckhardt).
Penticton offers a wide range of recreational activities, being right between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. There are several popular beaches, lots of water sports and a waterslide. In the winter time, Apex Alpine is only 27 km to the west, and there are another 3 ski hills in the Okanagan Valley. There is good rock climbing nearby on the Skaha Bluffs.
